Can you believe it? Our first semester is complete! This week has been busy with Delta and NWEA assessments and preparing for our chapel. Your child is amazing! I am always amazed with how much they have learned in such a short amount of time. Our classroom community continues to grow close, just like a family. It has been so great to laugh together, and to support each other when life is tough. Thanks for being an active part of our classroom, and for supporting us the many ways you do!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday we will have off school to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Next week, we will have some conversations and lessons about the active work he completed in our world. We will look at how MLK Jr. brought kindness to the world around him and cared so much about people, rather than judging them based on what they looked like. We will talk about the call we have to love others.

Homework:

*Current reading and math pages are due Tuesday, January 18.

*On Tuesday, a new reading slip and math page will come home, and they will be due Monday, January 24. The math Homework is a page to have your child continue our work on subtraction with borrowing.

*Keep Practicing Psalm 1 together at home.

SUBTRACTION:
We just started double digit subtraction, and we have been easing our way into it this past week and doing a lot of practice. If you find some spare time, give your child a few extra problems at home and see how they're doing. We'll get lots of practice--we learned a lot of strategies, but are really zoning in on the one you'd choose---"borrowing" or "ungrouping" from "next door" if needed. Using base 10 blocks and expanded form to show or check our work. Anyone who is still on addition for their math homework will be switching to subtraction after the report cards come. We will switch to everyone doing subtraction on Jan. 24.

JUNGLE EXPLORER OF THE WEEK:

Hallie was our special Jungle Explorer of the Week!
Thanks for sharing your poster and pictures with our class. We enjoyed getting to know you and learning that you love playing with your pets, your favorite place is Arizona, and your favorite foods are ice cream and pizza! We love that you want to be a waitress when you grow up! You are so special to God and to us, Hallie, and we loved getting to know more about you this week!

WORDS OF THE WEEK:

Thanks for helping your child practice these words at home: does, friend, enough, should, you're, through, ready, might, suddenly

Please make sure to go back and practice words that your child has had trouble with in the past.

Due to so many snow days, we'll do these words again next week: beautiful, special, couldn't.
