Thank You for a Great Year!

Thank you! I am so thankful for your love and support during this year! Your encouragement has blessed me so much...thank you. Thanks too, for entrusting your children under my care...they have been a joy to teach!

This will be the last blog update for the school year! I might just post some end of the year pictures on the last day! Looking forward to our field trip to the Cappon House and the Settler's House, Windmill Island, and then lunch at Smallenberg Park! Lots of fun with Field Day this week!
Check out all the pictures of our fun week at the end of the blog!

MOVIN' UP DAY:

Tuesday, June 4 will be a special day in 2nd grade. It's MOVING UP DAY! This means that your child will get an opportunity to visit Pine Ridge, meet next year's 3rd grade teacher, and go on a school tour. This has always been a great experience in the past, and it helps settle the nervous butterflies that students may have about the changes to a new building. I'm sure you'll hear lots of great stories about the students' visit!

END OF THE YEAR CHAPEL:

Mark your calendars! You won't want to miss this! On the last day of school, June 5, we will have a special "goodbye" chapel for the 2nd graders at 10:30. This a beautiful time where we come together as students, teachers and parents and thank God for the gift of South Side and ask His blessing on the 2nd graders as they move on to Pine Ridge! It's a touching and VERY memorable chapel! Try to make it if you can and bring the tissues! We will be outside so take your lawn chairs along! In case of rain we will move inside to the gym. Preschool dismissal at 11:15.

K-2 dismissal will shortly follow this at 11:30.

Summer Tutor List:

If you are interested in having your child tutored this summer please check the link for some who are available to tutor this summer.

End of year Field Trip:

The 2nd graders will be heading to the Cappon House and Settlers House, Windmill Island, and Samallenberg park for lunch on June 3. Please dress for the weather and maybe apply sunscreen if your child burns easily. Your child will need a home lunch as we will be eating at the park.

Happy Friday! How are we in the final stretch of school, approaching our last 12 days together? We still have lots of fun things to pack into our time together. God is SO good--we have SO much to celebrate! We have lots of fun end of year things going on in the next couple of weeks!

We looked at some artifacts from the past and learned how we can use these to learn about people and places from long ago. Ask your students what some of them were!

Homework for the year is all done!

Dioramas:

The students have finished their Dioramas and they will be on display in the Library starting Monday afternoon. Feel free to come in and take a peek during pick up or drop off times or even lunch if you have a moment! The students did a great job on them!

FIELD DAY:

Field day this year is going to be held on the afternoon of May 28. Please send along water bottles for your children, dress for the weather, slather on sunscreen, and pray for a nice day!

Paw Paw Park Field Trip:

Our class along with the other 2nd grade classes in the district are learning about being a good citizen and how 2nd graders can make a difference by helping their community and being good stewards of God's creation. We will be heading to Paw Paw Park to help remove invasive plant species from the park premises. These species can cause damage and disturb the natural plant species in Michigan. We will be there working for about an hour along with taking a hike. Students will need to wear long pants and have closed toe shoes for the trip. We will be going the morning of May 21. Maybe have bug repellent on your child if they are prone to bug or mosquito bites.

LIBRARY BOOKS:
If you have any library books at home please send them to school ASAP as it's helpful for the volunteers in the library to have all books back for their end of year work!

2nd graders have checked out 5-6 books from the library to take with them to Pine Ridge next year. These books will be used to start our their book boxes and be used for the first couple of weeks in their Reading class. These books were checked out on May 13. Do not panic if you get a notice of overdue books, double check the date. These books are being kept at school and i will bring them up to Pine Ridge on Moving up Day!

National Day of Prayer

A great week in 2nd grade! We got back into our regular routine after all the Kid Town work. Thanks again so much to those who came in and helped out!! It makes a huge difference and makes things run smoothly! We got together with Miss Hoeze's  first
graders performed their chick plays for us! The 2nd graders really enjoyed seeing the plays they did last year and had fun seeing the new born chicks at school!

National Day of Prayer:

On Thursday we gathered as PK-2 classes to pray for our nation and our school! What a blessing to have the freedom to pray and gather in worship! Continue to pray for our leaders and that they may seek God's wisdom in all their decisions.

Homework:

New reading slips and math pages are coming home on May 6. They will be due Monday, May 13. Math homework is more practice with double digit addition/subtraction.

* New Bible Memory will come home in the Homework Folder Monday!

Test on May 10 of our last set of 15 words. Please practice the ones your child doesn't know!

-If you have extra time around the house some great things to practice are: Writing numbers up to 100 (watch for letter/number reversals!), double digit addition/subtraction problems, names of coins and amounts, and counting piles of spare change!

Words of the Week:

Our words from our final set were: really, understand, question, against, old, happen, several, someone, slowly, better, follow, since, answer, plan, wanted.

We will have a test on all 15 words on May 10!

Movin' Up Day is a special day for 2nd graders...they get an opportunity to visit Pine Ridge, take a tour, peek into the third grade classrooms, and settle any anxious thoughts they may have about moving to a new school next year. Our time to head over and check things out will be the morning of Thursday, June 4. I'm sure you'll hear lots of great stories about the students' visit!

Tulip Time

Wednesday, May 8 will be a full day for all students due to Tulip Time removing the Wednesday parade. On Thursday, May 9, our 1st and 2nd graders will participate in the Tulip Time Kinderparade. We will have a normal school schedule in the morning. Preschoolers will be dismissed at their normal time (11:15am) with no afternoon enrichment. Kindergarteners will be dismissed at 11:30am. All Kindergarten students will need to use carpool that day, as all buses are being used for getting students to the parade. First and second graders will remain at school, eat a sack lunch from home (hot lunch is NOT provided), have recess, change into their marching apparel (if they choose not to wear it to school that day), and be bussed to the parade route. Please put sunscreen on your child if they are prone to burning as we are out in the sun for a while that afternoon!
