Kid Town

Happy Friday! What a fantastic week we have had in second grade! Kid Town has been a success and the students have enjoyed it immensely! We have seen wonderful examples of generous spirits and students who are polite and caring business boys/girls, and they have also been wonderful shoppers with a lot of patience. They have had a ton of fun learning about businesses and economics! Thanks so much to all the parent helpers who came in and glued items together, helped with ideas, ran stores, and helped us pack things up!! We could not have done it without all of you!! Your support is appreciated and we are so thankful for the wonderful, supportive community here at South Side! 

Homework:

Reading slips and math pages are coming home on Monday May 2 , 2022. They will be due Monday, May 9. 

* New Bible Memory will be coming home in the Homework Folder on Monday May 2!

-If you have extra time around the house some great things to practice are: Writing numbers up to 100 (watch for letter/number reversals!), trying some triple digit subtraction problems, and counting piles of spare change!

Hot Lunch:

A paper copy of the Hot Lunch menu is coming home today in your child's Friday Folder.

Tulip Time Pink Slip:

A pink half slip is coming home today in your child's Friday Folder. Please fill out this slip and return to school by Friday, May 6. This slip is for contact in case of an emergency the day of the Kinder Parade. More information will come later about our position for the parade and where to pick up your child at the end of the parade.

Ditto Store:

Ditto is in need of donations, and we want to make it easy for HC families to help! Next week the ditto truck will be parked at the High School accepting your donations during drop off and pick up hours. The greatest need at this time is for high quality clothing and household goods/decor. We will not be taking furniture at this drop off event. High School (near tennis courts): Wednesday, May 4 @ 7:45-9:15am and 2:30-4:00pm. This past year, ditto blessed all HC and ZCS students with a $325/student tuition reducing grant. Now's a great time to help support the resale store that supports each of our families. Thank you for your participation!

Thanks for coming to the Spring Program! It was exciting to be able to gather together and celebrate God’s love for us.  What a beautiful time of worship! The excitement continued with having our
grandparents visit today. It is so fun to celebrate learning with those who are so important to us. We are so blessed to have such amazing families and friends. 

It's here and it's in action! Kid Town "creating" has been a hit this week! It's been so fun to see the students use their God-given gifts and talents to make and create things. What imaginations they have! We've been working hard to create things for the "Trash for Cash" store, handing in homework to receive money, and today the students even had the opportunity to tithe from their own wallets! We are once again reminded why this is such a great couple of weeks in our Christ-centered school! It was such a neat teaching experience!

HOMEWORK:

A new packet of special Kid Town homework is coming home today. NOTE THAT ALL KID TOWN HOMEWORK IS OPTIONAL, but will be a big part of your child's "income." It will work the same as last week SO PLEASE SAVE THE BIBLE MEMORY PAGE (new verses are on the back). Bible memory verses will stop after Tuesday and your child will only need to hand in the reading/math half sheets.

KID TOWN:

The BIG week has arrived! Next week we will have our town set up in the gym! This town will come alive from 2:00-3:00 each day. Please know that even if you didn't sign up to help, you are all welcome any day during the week to stop by and check it out between 2:00-3:00pm! :) Kid Town comes alive on Tues. April 26 from 10:45-11:45.

We have a few slots left if anyone still has time to come and help out, thank you SO much to those who have come in already! Huge help! We are so grateful for your support!

CLEAN UP!!:

We would ABSOLUTELY LOVE any and all help on the final Friday of Kid Town, April 29, right after school to help clean up Kid Town. Any parents that can come and lend a hand would be SO appreciated! This is such a big project, and by the end of the week we are so grateful for extra helping hands! Please mark your calendars! :)

BOOK ORDER:

*Book orders came home last Friday. Please place your orders by Wednesday, April 27. You can place an online order (following the directions stapled to the flyers) and have access to ALL the books scholastic offers, or return the paper order form with checks made out to "Scholastic." Let me know if you'd like your order to be kept a secret from your child so you can use it as a gift, and I can set it aside.

He is Risen!

Welcome Back! We are so thankful for God's provision for all of us over Spring Break! It's been so fun to hear about all the different adventures that we had over
break! God is good!
Happy Easter to all of you! Our God is so amazing and we have spent time this week looking at how much Jesus loved us! Our Bible stories have led us to the cross and this weekend we get to see how Jesus conquered the grave by rising on Sunday morning! What a Savior!
There are a lot of exciting things coming up in the next few weeks with Kid Town! We are getting back into the swing of things, and we look forward to the wonderful things to come yet this year. 

Grandparents Day:
April 22  8:15-9:45 for K-2nd grade at South Side. Grandparents can start joining kids in their rooms at 8:45.
We are excited to celebrate our learning with our grandparents/grandfriends.

*Today in your child's Friday Folder, is your child's first set of Kid Town Homework. This packet contains your child's work for the week of April 18-22. It includes information about how Kid Town Homework goes. Kid Town Homework is for each day. Your child is responsible for returning a reading and math slip each day memorizing a Bible memory to say each day, to earn money for Kid Town. This Homework is optional but will make a difference in how much money they earn for each week. Reading slips must be signed by a parent to count towards their earnings. Next Friday we will send home the Homework Packet for the week of April 25-29.

Book Order:
A Scholastic Book Order is coming home in your child's Friday Folder today. Check out the great selection they have and if you would like to place an order please do so by April 27! I have heard from other teachers that orders are coming much QUICKER than last Fall.

Kid Town:
Kid Town is right around the corner, at the end of April! It’s a fun Social Studies program where we create products and earn “money” for one week, and then the following week we get to work at various businesses (these will be set up in our school gym—a Pizza Parlor, Pet Store, Post Office, Recycling Shop, etc) and shop at the businesses.
     April 18-22 will be our creating week where we will design items to sell! The week after that, April 25-29 will be our Kid Town week where the gym is set up as stores. We are SO excited to make this happen for the 2nd graders!! We'll need your help from home, encouraging your child to be responsible and get his/her daily homework done in order to earn the money to spend at Kid Town! We will also need some help from parents who are able and the link for sign up genius in below in case you still want to join us!

We have begun our lessons on Holy Week.  So far it's been a special experience learning and studying the Holy Week stories with your child. The conversations we are having are so meaningful. Ask your son/daughter what they've learned about our stories so far: Jesus Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem,  Jesus Cleansing the Temple, and Jesus' teachings in the Temple. We will learn some deep things together, and I look forward to these teachable moments to share God's awesome gift of love for us, and what it means as we learn how Jesus fulfilled God's plan of salvation! We serve such a loving Savior! 

Conferences:

I am looking forward to a special conference time with you AND your child this Monday or Wednesday! Remember, that these conferences are STUDENT LED and your child must come  with you. The students have worked hard in preparation for this night!  Be sure encourage them before and after the conference and acknowledge their hard work!
     This is such an awesome time of celebrating the 2nd grade growth that we've seen, and also coming together to challenge your child in the last few months of 2nd grade. One question your child will ask you at conferences will be, "Mom & Dad, what do you think I'm good at?" Think about this ahead of time, and come ready with a mental list of some of the ways that you want to encourage your child in the special way God has created him/her to be!

Field Trip:

Our class will be visiting the Holland Police Station and the District Court on Tuesday March 29. We are doing this as part of our Social Studies unit this quarter. We have been studying how the government in our community was put together to keep us safe and some of the services they provide. We are excited to see how these work for the betterment of our community.

Homework Reminders:
- There will be no math homework and no official reading slip next week, but please be sure to continue to enjoy books this week and during Spring Break!!
- Please continue to practice the Easter Bible Memory (Matthew 28:1-10) at home with your child! We will finish this up this week before Spring Break.
- Our April Bible Memory, Acts 2:1-4 will come home the first Monday we're back from break. We'll start it after Spring Break.

Kid Town:

Reading Rally Week:

Our South Side Staff is eager to celebrate our growing readers!!  To celebrate March is Reading Month, the staff has put together a special week  (March 28 - March 31) to promote our growing readers.  Here are the details and ways in which you can assist your child for our special days:

 

Monday, March 28 - ROCK DAY:  The children will be engaged in decorating a rock to show off who they are as a "Rock Star Reader." They have ‘rock star’ status as a reader who has worked hard to grow their reading this year! 

 

Tuesday, March 29 - FAVORITE BOOK DAY:  The children will be engaged in making a book cover of their favorite book and then displaying it on their locker.  Once all of the posters are up, we will have a book parade through the halls to see everyone's favorite books!

 

Wednesday, March 30 - READ A T-SHIRT DAY - Please help your child find a t-shirt that has one or several words on it so that we can read each other's t-shirts.  We will also have a visit with Ann Pott from the Herrick District Library for a story and to hear more about our amazing public library!

 

Thursday, March 31 - CAMP-OUT DAY - Your child is welcome to bring a blanket to make a tent to read in today.  We know that it can get dark in those tents, so each child will be gifted with a flashlight to make reading even more fun and enjoyable.  

 

Thank you for encouraging your child to build his/her reading skills by reading each and every night!  This time practicing now will have life-long benefits!  Thank you!!

It's been a great week in second grade! We have enjoyed the change in the weather and are ready for winter to be over. The students are ready for recesses that allow them to have "no coats". They are working hard on getting ready for their student led conferences and are getting excited to share that special time with you. Thanks so much for letting me be a part of your child's life each day. I enjoy seeing them grow and change and find it hard to believe we are three fourths of the way through the year!

First Grade Bake Sale:
The first graders are excited to be hosting a Rainforest Bake Sale. The bake sale will start on Monday March 21th and run each day of the week during the lunch hour. Each baked good will cost .25. All funds raised will be donated to help save the amazing animals of the rainforest! Start saving your quarters now and plan to buy some goodies at the first grade rainforest bake sale!

SPRING CONFERENCES: 

Conferences will be coming up at the end of March (March 28 & 30 from 4-8pm). 2nd grade takes a different twist on conferences in the Spring--they are actually STUDENT LED. This means that your son/daughter joins us in conversation, and he/she leads the conference. We work hard at creating a portfolio and collecting work samples, and it is an awesome experience for you to see how your child has taken ownership of his/her learning this year. As teachers and parents, we are able to encourage and pour into your child, as well as find ways to challenge him/her for the last quarter of 2nd grade. This is a very important time together, and you'll want to save the date! Make sure to check you have signed up!

Living Hope Singers:

Looking for something fun to do as a family this weekend? Come to the Living Hope Singers' Showcase concert, “The Most Excellent ‘80s: A Night of Killer Jams and Moves!”  Enjoy an evening full of fun music, vibrant costumes, and impressive choreography. Shows are at 7pm Friday and Saturday night at the High School. Tickets will be available at the door, but they can also be purchased online at hcs.ludus.com. Feel like staying home? Happy Friday! We had a fun week, and it has been an absolute joy to reflect on the miracles of Jesus with your child during Bible. We're learning about how Jesus has power over sickness, death, Satan, and Nature. What a comfort that is in the midst of uncertainties in our world. It's crazy that we are wrapping up quarter 3 already! Time flies when you're having fun!
