Tulip Time

We had lots of fun marching together as a class in the Tulip Time parade! Thanks for helping us get your kiddos ready to go...they did a great job! What gorgeous weather! So much fun to celebrate part of our dutch heritage and to celebrate community! The kids did such a fabulous job! Check out pictures at the end of the blog!

HOMEWORK:

Reading slips and math papers are due on Monday May 12.

Our final Math Homework page and final purple Reading slip will be coming home on Monday. They will be due May 19!

Work on our new Bible Memory- Galatians 5:22-26

-If you have extra time around the house some great things to practice are: Writing numbers up to 100 (watch for letter/number reversals!), double digit addition/subtraction problems, names of coins and amounts, and counting piles of spare change!

FIELD DAY:

Field day this year is going to be held on the afternoon of May 16. Please send along water bottles for your child, dress for the weather, slather on sunscreen, and pray for a nice day!

MOVIN' UP DAY:

Monday, June 2 will be a special day in 2nd grade. It's MOVING UP DAY! This means that your child will get an opportunity to visit Pine Ridge, meet next year's 3rd grade teacher, and go on a school tour. This has always been a great experience in the past, and it helps settle the nervous butterflies that students may have about the changes to a new building. I'm sure you'll hear lots of great stories about the students' visit!

End of Year Field Trip:

Our class will be going to Windmill Island and Dutch Village as a part of our Social Studies Unit on Holland history and as our end of year field trip. We will head to Windmill Island first and explore, then head to Dutch Village for a tour, Dutch dancing, and some free time in the park. Students should wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather. Students will need a sack/home lunch as well. I have enough parents for our field trip! Thanks to those who signed up to go along! If you signed up to go along please turn in your money ASAP!

Beach Day:

1st graders and 2nd graders are going to be gathering together at Tunnel park on Friday, May 30. Your child will need a sack lunch and a beach bucket for sand castle making for this day. We are planning to stop at Captain Sundae on the way back. (I'm so excited for this!). The kids can choose between chocolate, vanilla, or twist soft serve in a cup. I will mark down their choice here at school. It costs $2.70. Please send this money to school by Friday, May 16.

Sassafras Ridge:

1st and 2nd grade will be heading to Sassafras Ridge for the last time this year! We will heading out there to take in God's creation and have some fun learning. We will be there over our lunch time so students will need a sack/home lunch that day!

End of the Year Chapel

Save the date! We will have a special end of the year Chapel to send off our 2nd graders on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 4. Come gather with us from 10:25-11:15am for a time of worship together. We’ll be out on the playground, so bring a lawn chair if you’d like (if there’s rain we’ll move it to the gym).  After chapel, Preschool students will be dismissed, and K-2 students will have a quick 15 minutes to close out the year in the classrooms with their teacher, and their dismissal will follow at 11:30am.

Miss Soderman's Last Day:

On May 27 it will be Miss Soderman's last day. We will have a small party and say goodbye to her. If your child would like to make a special card for her they are welcome to make one at home and take it to school. I can hide it until that day if they want to bring it in earlier. :)

Kid Town in the Gym

Happy Friday! What a fantastic week we have had in second grade! Kid Town has been a success and the students have enjoyed it immensely! We have seen wonderful examples of generous spirits and students who are polite and caring business boys/girls, and they have also been wonderful shoppers with a lot of patience. They have had a ton of fun learning about businesses and economics! Thanks so much to all the parent helpers who came in and were a banker so kids could get paid, glued items together, helped with ideas, ran stores, and helped us pack things up!! We could not have done it without all of you!!!! Your support is appreciated and we are so thankful for the wonderful, supportive community here at South Side!

Jungle Explorer of the Week:

Miss Soderman was our Jungle Explorer of the week! We had so much fun getting know more about who she is! She is good at arts and crafts, she enjoys going up north, and her favorite place is Cancun Mexico. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up and her favorite food is ice cream! We had fun learning more about Miss Soderman and who God made her to be! Thanks for sharing your poster and pictures with the class!

Tulip Time

Wednesday, May 7 will be a full day for all students due to Tulip Time removing the Wednesday parade. On Thursday, May 8, our 1st and 2nd graders will participate in the Tulip Time Kinderparade. We will have a normal school schedule in the morning. Preschoolers will be dismissed at their normal time (11:15am) with no afternoon enrichment. Kindergarteners will be dismissed at 11:30am. All Kindergarten students will need to use carpool that day, as all buses are being used for getting students to the parade. First and second graders will remain at school, eat a sack lunch from home (hot lunch is NOT provided), have recess, change into their marching apparel (if they choose not to wear it to school that day), and be bussed to the parade route.

End of Year Field Trip:

CREATE!

It's here and it's in action! Kid Town "creating" has been a hit this week! It's been so fun to see the students use their God-given gifts and talents to make and create things. What imaginations they have! We've been working hard to create things for the "Trash for Cash" store, handing in homework to receive money, and today the students even had the opportunity to tithe from their own wallets! We are once again reminded why this is such a great couple of weeks in our Christ-centered school! It is such a neat teaching experience!

HOMEWORK:

A new packet of special Kid Town homework is coming home today. NOTE THAT ALL KID TOWN HOMEWORK IS OPTIONAL, but will be a big part of your child's "income." It will work the same as last week SO PLEASE SAVE THE BIBLE MEMORY PAGE (new verses are on the back). Bible memory verses will stop after Tuesday and your child will only need to hand in the reading/math half sheets.

Monday Homework folders will come home with the next 3 words on our blue half sheet. Keep working on these!

Jungle Explorer:

Jonathan was our special Jungle Explorer of the Week! Thanks for sharing your poster and pictures with our class. We enjoyed getting to know you and learning that you are good at baseball. We love that you want to be a baseball player when you grow up! Your favorite place is Tennessee and your favorite food is eggs. You are so special to God and to us, Jonathan, it was great getting to know more about you this week!

KID TOWN:

The BIG week has arrived! Next week we will have our town set up in the gym! This town will come alive from 12:30-1:30 each day. Please know that even if you didn't sign up to help, you are all welcome any day during the week to stop by and check it out between 12:30-1:30pm! :)

CLEAN UP!!:

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE any and all help on the final Friday of Kid Town, May 2, right after school to help clean up Kid Town. Any parents that can come and lend a hand would be SO appreciated! This is such a big project, and by the end of the week we are so grateful for extra helping hands! Please mark your calendars! :)

Easter

Welcome Back! We are so thankful for God's provision for all of us over Spring Break! It's been so fun to hear about all the different adventures that we had over break! God is good! Happy Easter to all of you! Our God is so amazing and we have spent time this week looking at how much Jesus loved us and we have finished up our Easter stories. May you feel his love as you celebrate this weekend!

It includes information about how Kid Town Homework goes. Kid Town Homework is for each day. Your child is responsible for returning a reading and math slip each day and memorizing a Bible memory to say each day, to earn money for Kid Town. This Homework is optional, but will make a difference in how much money they earn for each week. Reading slips must be signed by a parent to count towards their earnings. Next Friday we will send home the Homework Packet for the week of April 28-May 2.

We have begun our lessons on Holy Week.  So far it's been a special experience learning and studying the Holy Week stories with your child. Miss Soderman has started these conversations and they are so meaningful. Ask your son/daughter what they've learned about our stories so far: Jesus Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem,  Jesus Cleansing the Temple, and Jesus' teachings in the Temple. We will learn some deep things together, and We look forward to these teachable moments to share God's awesome gift of love for us, and what it means as we learn how Jesus fulfilled God's plan of salvation! We serve such a loving Savior!

• Monday, March 31 - FAVORITE BOOK DAY: Bring your favorite book to school. The children will be making a book cover of their favorite book and then displaying it on their locker. 

• Tuesday, April 1 - BEACH DAY - Bring in your beach towel and dress for a day at the beach. Shorts, Short sleeve shirts, and sunglasses or sun hats. (No swimsuits, please.)

• Wednesday, April 2 - READ A T-SHIRT DAY - Please help your child find a t-shirt that has one or several words on it so that we can read each other's t-shirts. 

• Thursday, April 3 - COZY DAY - Wear your pajamas and bring a blanket and stuffed animal.

What a great week in 2nd grade! We have been working hard on our Conference packets and getting ready for meeting with our parents. What a blessing to see the students grow this year and it was so fun to see them share in the celebration of learning!

March Is Reading Month!

As part of the national celebration of reading month, West Michigan WhiteCaps is providing a free optional Reading Tracker/Ticket Order Form.

1. Students and/or their grown-ups keep track of reading minutes in March. 
2. Those who participate are eligible for 2 free tickets to select WhiteCaps home games.

All information regarding this incentive and how to order free tickets is included on the WhiteCaps 2025 Reading Club Form. 

SPRING CONFERENCES: 

Conferences are coming up at the end of March (March 20 & 25 from 4-8pm). 2nd grade takes a different twist on conferences in the Spring--they are actually STUDENT LED. This means that your son/daughter joins us in conversation, and he/she leads the conference. We work hard at creating a portfolio and collecting work samples, and it is an awesome experience for you to see how your child has taken ownership of his/her learning this year. This means that all 2nd grade conferences are in person. As teachers and parents, we are able to encourage and pour into your child, as well as find ways to challenge him/her for the last quarter of 2nd grade. This is a very important time together, and you'll want to save the date. Make sure to sign up!

Bake Sale

The first graders at South Side are excited to be hosting a Rainforest Bake Sale. The bake sale will start on Monday March 17th and run each day of the week during the lunch hour. Each baked good will cost .25. All funds raised will be donated to Holland Christian Middle and High schoolers who go on a mission trip to South Africa. We are excited that our money will go towards building God's Kingdom. Start saving your quarters now, send them with your child to school starting March 17, and plan to buy some goodies at the first grade rainforest bake sale! Thank you for your support!

Book Fair 

The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to South Side during conferences in March. It will be open Thursday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 25 from 4-8pm at South Side. Proceeds from the book fair help provide books for our library. Check out the brochures coming home, and join us at the book fair!
